Jane Eyre was  by no means an elegant or extravagant woman, but refined in her ways of gentleness and kindness. My sister, Rachel, just loves the story of Jane Eyre and Jane’s style, from what I’ve seen in films and photos is a very simply, but practical style. For today it would seem to be done in a ‘fancy’ manner, but at the time Jane’s story takes place it was very plain.

Start by separating your hair, from side to side, half way so the back of your hair is down and the other half hanging over your forehead.

Gather up the back half into a tight ponytail – make sure it’s smooth all the way around with no bumps or loops.

On the last ‘go around’ when you’re putting the hair-tie don’t pull the hair all the way through. Leave a very small amount looped and let the rest hang down.

To be historically accurate you part the hair right now the middle, but you can do it on a side part if you want.

Brush either side of the front section to the side and twist slightly. Afterward take the twist under the hair hanging down from the ponytail and wind it around the hair-tie. Use a few bobby-pins to secure in place. Do this on both sides. Make sure both side twists are even.

Take the hair hanging down and twist it until tight, and then wind that around the ponytail to make a bun.

That is really all there is to it. I chose to put Rachel’s front section behind the ears whereas what I’ve seen of Jane’s that covered hers. Her bun was all a bit plainer and tighter as a governess would have, but still it is the same style. This style really looks lovely on Rachel.

I just tried this style on my own head and enjoyed it. Simple and fairly easy to do.
I make one adjustment to the directions when I did it on myself. Because my hair is shorter (it’s now just about shoulder length) when I made the ponytail I had to pull my hair all the way through the elastic and make a bun with the whole “tail”.

Just tried it on my hair and I love it. Had to do it twice, but I finally got it to where I like it. It’s adorable!!! Definitely gonna wear my hair like this more often.
I’ll have pics of it on today’s Challenge post, but I have to wait for a clean shirt to come out of the washer. :)
Oh, and a little tip- definitely make sure to have a hair tie that’s a similar color to your hair or else it looks really odd.

I really like this hairstyle! My hair has gotten quite long, and I have been getting quite lazy with it. Thanks for the inspiration, and the reminder that a hairstyle does not have to be overly showy to be put up.
