I was just wondering what you thought about donating your hair. My hair is getting fairly long, about 30inches, and I am thinking about cutting it so that I can donate it to someone who has cancer. I believe that God wants us to give of ourselves, and sometimes that might mean giving up something that we hold too close (like hair in my case). And it will grow back.  I think I worry too much about what my hair looks like and how to make it look perfect when I know that I should be focusing on the Lord and simply looking my best for Him. What is your opinion on hair donation?

You posed a very good question and hair donation is a very noble cause, but to find the answer for these tough questions we must go to the Scriptures. We are told in 1 Corinthians (11:6) that it is shameful for a woman to have her hair cut short and if so then she should veil. Since your hair is so long and I can’t imagine you getting it cut off to where it would be considered short, in my view above the shoulder blades. I don’t think this would conflict with the Scriptures. However, if you did have shorter hair or would cut most of it off than I would probably discourage you from this course of action.

Hair is mentioned many times in both the Old and New Testaments. We see Jezebel styling her hair and applying make-up as to be seductive towards Yehu when he arrived in the city. (1 Kings 9: 30) Many times hair is noted in the Books of the Prophets in relation to some kind of adultery Yehovah’s people committed with the pagans. We can see by their actions and what actions Yehovah takes against them to call them back to him.

Hair is a big part of our society and culture, and being fashionable or trendy plays a big role into being accepted. No one wants to look out of place or weird. A woman’s hair is one of her feminine beauties and we are told having long hair enhances her appearance. I can see where you are coming from with giving of ourselves, especially when it’s something we do hold close, but in this case I think that would conflict with the Scriptures – when most girls do cut their hair short. I think your thought-line is a good one, but it seems you think removing your hair is the solution. I would encourage you to ask Yehovah to help you overcome this weakness and to do a study on vanity. I know it is a hard thing to overcome and I am still dealing with it in the ‘hair-department’ as well. We can overcome any sinful desire or trait with the power that only he can give.

On the direct issue on of hair donation I would strongly urge you to research any organization that you would consider donating to. I know of at least one major organization that does not use most of the hair receive, for whatever reasons, and then overcharges for what they do.

Great answer. When you brought this e-mail to my attention, I didn’t think to look at what the scriptures had to say simply because I thought it was such a trivial issue. I failed to remember 1 Cor. 11, which is a passage I have read again and again. I appreciate the fact that you used YHVH’s Word to come up with such a wise answer. If only more young women did the same.

    Blessings!
