Old-Fashioned Updo
by Miss Tiffany, True Femininity
This slightly old-fashioned updo has a very feminine look and with a little practice is an easy way to do your hair for the day in only 5-10 minutes.
Before you begin you will need to gather anywhere from 30-45 bobby pins, depending on your hair texture and thickness. I have medium/thin hair and I use around 30 each time. Hairspray is also important, though not completely necessary. I find that if I use hairspray I can generally go about any activity without my hair falling down–even running!
After brushing hair, begin to pull hair back on one side like this:
Make sure you are only getting the top layer of your hair. Take the hair to the back of your head and form it into a small circle, using the bobby pins to pin it up as you go. It should look like this when you’ve finished:
Repeat this on the other side. You should now have your top layer of hair in two circles on the back. Now begin taking the under-layers and forming them into more circles on top of the ones you’ve already created. These can be larger and looser than the previous smaller circles. This hairstyle is also not about perfection. It will look different every time, and it is okay for it to look slightly messy/loose. Now that you have piled some more hair onto your two circles, it should begin to look somewhat like this:
Continue to take the lower layers of hair and pile them into circles. Each time only take strands that are small enough so that you can pin them securely with the bobby pins:
Make sure to leave the lowest layers of the hair the last ones you put up. Once you’ve finished piling all layers of your hair, secure any loose ends that may be poking up with more bobby pins. Although the hair style need not be “perfect,” it looks best if you can smooth it out to some degree. Use a hand mirror to see how it looks from behind. If you are satisfied with how it looks, use hairspray to keep it firmly in place all day.
Finished hairstyle from behind:
(If you chose bobby pins that match your hair color, they won’t stand out as much.)
Finished hairstyle from above and side:

Wow, that looks really pretty! I’ll try it, then teach it to my friends. thanks for sharing!

Very Cool! I like old fashioned hair styles! I just signed up for this site a couple weeks ago, do you have any other cool hair styles?!?
Thanks!

That is a beautifully feminine hairstyle. I love it. It reminds me of a Pride and Prejudice hairstyle. I love it when Amanda puts my hair up in a messy bun. I can’t do a messy bun myself but I might be able to try yours and succeed. (I have a hard time getting my hair to do anything but be in a ponytail and be braided.)
But yes, I want an encore! More hairstyles.

SO pretty!! I’m going to be the maid of honor in my brothers wedding next month and I’m trying to find a way to put my hair up. I might try this. Have you ever tried doing it after you curled it? Do the curls show much at all? Or is it not worth to curl it?

I have worked w/hair all lengths and thickness, curly and straight, formal and casual styles. One of the easiest ways to anchor your hair previous to an updo is w/ a ponytail (unless you’d rather use a ton of bobby pins. Curl hair, then anchor curls exactly where you want w/ bobby pins or pretty clips.

I haven’t tried curling it before putting it up, but I should. I think that might add a lot more volume to the final look. Good idea!

Oooo, so pretty! I might try it sometime. :) And ditto to Miss Rachel’s last line. :D

It’s quite lovely!! However, I’d like to find a way to use less bobby pins, or at least try to make them less obvious….I think perhaps if you curled your hair it would hide it a bit more.
I agree with the other young ladies…we want more cool hair styles!! -_^

Very nice! I like the ‘messy’ look to it, but I’d have to find a way to hide the bobby pins as well though, kinda a pet peeve of mine. There are some great hairstyle videos on youtube. Have you checked them out?

I also really like this. A lovely hair style and I love your blog, I found it on the Ladies Against Femininism site and love your articles! thanks for the encouragment to be feminine and modest like our Creator intended!
I am going to try it with my naturally curly hair. It will probably turn out a little differently, but I think it would still look quite nice. I might just have to post pictures too. I will try it tomorrow.

Woah! That is waaay to many bobby pins girlfriend!
the style itself is beautiful and eleagant. You could achieve the same result using hairpins. The beauty of using hairpins is that they don’t show. Ask your hairdresser to show you how to use them. There is a technique to it that you have to learn, however it isn’t difficult and with a little practice you will have it down in no time. You have to first push the hairpin in the opposite direction that you want it to go, once it catches the hair that you want it to hold you push it in the other direction. It’s a really neat trick!

Terry

The above link has a LOT of old fashioned hair up-do’s….please do use discernment on this site due to old fashioned low-cut clothing on a few posts. The link above doesn’t haven’t any of that though…but just wanted to mention that so no one would think that I totally endorse this site. -_^

I’m afraid I’m to lazy to spend the time doing that to my hair. Besides, my hair is way to thick to do that!
